IPX9 and IPX9K testing are the highest ingress protection water ratings currently available in the IP Code family. The IPX9K addition to the DIN standard for parts for road vehicles and transportation equipment served as the impetus for this testing. Many years later, IEC60529 was updated to include a comparable IPX9 grade.

IPX9 test according to IEC 60529
The IPX9 test is performed by utilizing a test nozzle prescribed in IEC 60529 to spray a stream of water onto the enclosure. In this test, the impact force of the water jets is measured specifically to determine the distribution force of the water being sprayed.

IPX9K Test according to ISO 20653
Any equipment designed for mounting outside of a passenger compartment must pass IPX9K testing, according to ISO 20653.
Differences between Ratings:
The test apparatus and testing procedure are extremely similar, despite the descriptions not being exact; the calibration techniques being the sole distinction.
? IPX9K: protection against “high pressure/steam jet cleaning”
? IPX9: protection against “high pressure and temperature water jets”
What makes IPX9K testing different from IPX9 testing?
Both IPX9 and IPX9K ratings indicate that a product can withstand water jets that are sprayed at high temperatures and pressure, however the testing process and standards are different for each certification. IEC 60529 and ISO 20653 both specify test procedures for IPX9 and IPX9K ratings, respectively.
Test Configuration:
IPX9 & IPX9K both require a blast of high pressure water, similar to that of a commercial pressure washer, which has been heated to a temperature of 80°C (176° F). The product is then rotated on a turntable at a speed of 5 RPM, as fan jets are focused at 4 positions (0°, 30°, 60°, 90°). In sequence, each fan blasts the product being tested with the heated, high pressure water for 30 seconds per position. Upon completion of all spray angles, the product must meet the acceptance criteria specified in the end-product standards.
