Dust Protected and Dust Tight (IP5X & IP6X)
The degree of protection that an enclosure offers against invasions is tested through ingress protection testing. Solids or water can cause intrusions. Dust ingress testing is the smallest solid that is tested. To finish the IP Code dust testing, dust testing labs need to employ calibrated material.
The IP Code specifies the level of dust protection. Two numbers are provided by the Ingress Protection IP testing. Protection from solids is represented by the first number. The defense against liquids is the second figure.
The IP Codes IP5X and IP6X are the ones that were acquired from dust testing. The water resistance of the enclosure is indicated by the value of X in these codes, which goes from zero to nine. The initial number for dust-tight containers is 6, while the first number for enclosures that offer dust protection is 5.
IP5X Dust Protected Enclosure
The IP5X definition is given by IEC 60529, which is regarded as the IP5X standard. An enclosure that allows some dust to enter but not completely stops it is said to be dust-protected. These enclosures have an IP 5X dust protection rating.
Dust cannot enter in enough to prevent the equipment from functioning satisfactorily in order for it to be deemed IP 5X test protected. Thus, in order to assert IP5X protection, the IP5X dust test necessitates an evaluation of the equipment activities.
IP6X Dust Tight Enclosure
A dust tight enclosure is defined as having a degree of protection where no ingress of dust. The ingress protection ratings for these enclosures are IP 6X dust tight. Unlike IP 5X dust testing, the IP 6X test requires no additional assessment as the presence of any dust in the enclosure is considered unacceptable.
The enclosures have an IP Code of IP6X meaning it is dust tight and can have various degrees of water protection.
IP5X and IP6X Ingress Protection Testing Laboratory Testing Procedures
IP5X Testing:The level of protection against dust infiltration is evaluated using IP5X testing. The degree of protection against solid particles (dust) is indicated by the number "5" in IP5X. The following is how the test is conducted:
Test Setup: A test chamber is filled with the equipment or product to be tested.
Dust Application: Using a dust distributor or other tool, fine dust particles of a certain size are blasted towards the product from various angles. To guarantee consistency in the test, the dust particles employed for the experiment have a predetermined size.
Test Duration: For a predetermined amount of time, the product is subjected to blowing dust.
Evaluation: The product is inspected to see if any dust has gotten into the container and impacted its functionality after the exposure.
IP6X Testing:
The level of protection against the infiltration of dust, especially fine particles, is assessed using IP6X testing. In comparison to IP5X, the "6" in IP6X denotes a better level of protection against solid particles. The testing process entails the following procedures and is more rigorous:
Test Setup: The product is put within a test chamber, much like in IP5X testing.
Dust Application: The product is fully surrounded by a sizable volume of fine dust that has been placed into the test chamber and sized according to a predetermined standard.
Test Duration: Typically longer than in IP5X testing, the product is subjected to the fine dust for a predetermined amount of time.
Evaluation: Following the exposure period, the product is carefully examined to see if any dust has entered the enclosure and caused damage or affected its functionality.
IP Dust and Water Resistance Evaluations
As previously mentioned, enclosures are evaluated on their protection against solid objects and liquids. An example would be water and dust resistant IP68. In this case, the enclosure is dust tight. It also met the requirements for immersion beyond one meter.
Another example is an enclosure that is IP67 water and dust resistant. The six represents dust tight. The seven represents immersion in water up to one meter.
